Sleeping on a latex mattress is to feel comfort and get up without back pain after a restful sleep. This is achieved thanks to its soft support and its adaptability to the body. In addition, it is a hypoallergenic material, so mites do not proliferate in it, making it a very good option for people with allergies or asthma.

For all these reasons, investing in a latex mattress is doing it for your well-being. But, there are so many models and features that it is difficult to choose the most suitable one, since not all latex mattresses are the same.

To help you find what you need, we have prepared this guide with the most important features and also with a selection of the 5 best latex mattresses this year.

4 Key Features of a Good Latex Mattress

When choosing your latex mattress, there are 4 aspects that you must take into account: its composition, its natural or synthetic origin, its firmness and its breathability.

Depending on your tastes and needs, there will be one that suits you better than another.

Composition: it is the first thing you have to pay attention to in order to know its properties and benefits for your rest.

In the case of latex, it is common to find both mattresses that are 100% made of this material, as well as combinations that include only one layer. In this sense, the latex layer must be at least 4 cm thick in order to enjoy its benefits.

Natural or synthetic: When we talk about latex mattresses, we are not always referring to natural latex. And it is that its origin can also be synthetic and you will even find models that combine both.

TreeFor a mattress to be considered natural latex, its content must be at least 85% of natural origin.

A 100% natural latex mattress will always be of higher quality but also of a higher price. For this reason, it is common to find mattresses combined with 20% natural latex and the remaining 80% synthetic. In this way, a good quality product is achieved, with the benefits of both materials and at a good price.

Firmness: The firmness of a latex mattress is usually medium. Although you will find models with different densities, compared to other materials, it is difficult for latex to be too hard.

This makes it a material with a good adaptation to a varied group of sleepers, although be careful when choosing if you are very robust. In this case, make sure it’s a medium-firm mattress to high.

Plus, in combination, you can soften hard cores like pocket springs or high-density foams, or support softer materials like a memory foam top layer.

Breathability: Latex is a poorly breathable material. Hence, the importance of the perforations or channels and the treatments that are applied to give it greater ventilation.

Taking into account that our body produces around 0.75 liters of water when we rest, it is important that you take into account the breathability of this material.

And it is that without a good ventilation system, moisture ends up penetrating the mattress and, over time, can damage it and produce odors, which will cause you a worse rest.

Another element that will favor breathability is the fabric with which the cover is made. For example, the Stretch fabric has perforations that help to breathe better. Other fabrics that enhance it are natural ones, such as cotton or bamboo fibers.

It is important that the cover can be easily removed for regular cleaning.

The 5 best latex mattresses of 2023

1. Kipli

For those looking for a versatile and premium quality mattress

The 100% natural latex mattress with organic cotton and tencel cover

Material: 100% natural latex

Height: 22 cm

Firmness: two levels (medium and medium-high)

Kipli mattress detail new_original

Natural latex will guarantee you a durable mattress, since it is one of the most resistant materials, and comfortable, because, in addition to adaptability and comfort, it also offers good support.

This material has been extracted from the Hevea brasiliensis tree in Sri Lanka, grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The rest of the manufacturing process is carried out entirely in Italy.

Two levels of firmness

The Kipli mattress is reversible and has two different levels of firmness depending on the side you use. This will allow you to choose the firmness that best suits you and, therefore, it seems to us to be a highly versatile mattress that adapts well to practically any sleeper profile. In our case, we have a weight difference of more than 20 kg and we sleep in different positions and we both slept perfectly.

Let’s see each of its layers in detail:

  • 15 cm layer of high density latex of 85kg/m3 . It is the firmer side and therefore it will be the most suitable for robust people, since it offers greater support and avoids the uncomfortable boat effect. It has 7 differentiated comfort zones that we have been able to verify increase the ergonomics of the mattress by adapting to the pressure exerted by the different areas of the body.
  • 5 cm layer of 65kg/m3 latex , softer and more flexible. Suitable for people who are lighter, looking for a softer feel or who sleep on their side.

A detail that we like: to join the two layers, a natural glue made from water and liquid latex has been used. This way no toxic products are added to the mattress.

We are also convinced by its good independence of beds, since when sleeping we have not noticed the movement of the other.

Hygiene and maintenance

Being entirely made of 100% natural latex, this mattress is a good option for people with allergies and asthma, since, in addition to not being able to harbor mites in it, it is free of chemicals and substances that are potentially harmful to health.

The cover – made of organic cotton and tencel with wool padding – is soft to the touch, breathes well and provides a pleasant and fluffy thermal sensation. In addition, we find it very practical that the mattress is removable. Although it cannot be machine washed (so it does not shrink), it must be taken to the dry cleaner for dry cleaning.

It has 4 handles on the sides of the cover that facilitate its transport , turn it over and help us to remove the cover comfortably.

Delivery and packaging

It arrives rolled up, vacuum packed, wrapped in recycled plastic and protected by a jute bag . This makes it relatively easy to transport, but keep in mind that latex mattresses are heavy, so if you have to climb stairs, you’ll need help from another person.

Once unrolled and placed on the bed base, in a few hours it recovers its natural shape. When we opened it we noticed a slight smell (although much milder than that given off by foam and memory foam mattresses) that disappeared after leaving it for a few hours in a well-ventilated room.

Certificates, test and guarantee

We like that you can test the mattress quietly at home for 100 nights because that way the body gets used to the mattress and spends the adaptation period that we always need when changing it.

In addition, the EUROLATEX and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificates of this mattress give us greater confidence in its quality.

You also have a 10-year warranty , which guarantees a product in optimal conditions throughout its useful life.

Although it is true that it is not the cheapest option, after having tested its characteristics and having slept a few nights in it, I assure you that, in our opinion, it is worth every penny of its price.

2. Liroon Latex

For people looking for high ergonomics especially for side sleepers

Material: 100% natural latex

Height: 22 cm

Firmness: average

Liroon Latex Mattress

See price

Made with 100% natural latex , the Liroon is a medium firm mattress that adapts well to different positions, especially for those who usually sleep on their side.

Its structure is formed by:

  •  A highly perforated 18 cm latex core with 7 comfort zones that distributes pressure well, adapts correctly to the weight exerted by the different parts of the body and, according to the manufacturer, promotes blood circulation.
  • A layer of 4 cm of latex with a higher density of open cell matrix with perforations to promote air circulation that helps expel heat. In testing, we’ve found that its ribbed design relieves pressure points at the shoulders, waist, and lower back, allowing for ergonomic alignment.

Being made of natural latex, it is hypoallergenic, antibacterial and fungicidal, so it will be a good option for allergy sufferers . In addition, it is free of toxic chemicals, certified by CertiPUR.

In the movement transmission test, the Liroon has passed, being suitable for double beds. However, in our opinion, if one moves a lot and the other is a light sleeper, it will not be the best option.

Cover and maintenance

Also, it has a double cover :

  • A 100% natural cotton interior that is soft and promotes breathability.
  • An exterior , quite soft and fluffy to the touch, made of stretch fabric that can be removed and washed at home or dry-cleaned.

We like that it is removable , as it makes cleaning the mattress easier. But we have missed that it has handles, because it is a very heavy mattress and it is difficult to move or turn around without them.

Purchase conditions

You can try it for 100 nights at home and it has a 10-year guarantee . It also has free shipping and returns in the Iberian Peninsula.

3. Bellagio Yanis

For those looking for a top-of-the-range mattress

Material: 100% slices Talalay

Height: 24 cm

Firmness: three levels (low, medium and high)

Bellagio yanis

A mattress made in the United Kingdom with the highest quality natural latex on the market, Talalay, of great finesse and softness.

Talalay latex offers benefits that conventional natural latex does not have:

  • It is much more porous, giving it a greater resilience capacity and offering greater support.
  • It adapts better to the contours of the body, relieving pressure points, so your back and spine will be more relaxed and will stay in the correct position throughout the night.
  • The Talalay process offers a latex of extreme fineness , which increases its ventilation capacity (thanks to its open cell structure).

Bellagio Yanis MaterialsWe like that it is removable . The 22 cm core of Talalay is covered with an inner cotton cover, a natural wool layer and a Tencel cover . This cover is very soft, helps regulate body temperature, absorbs moisture and dries faster than other fibers.

Did you know that… It can be washed in the washing machine at home and, furthermore, it does not wrinkle or shrink.

In addition, its Oeko-Tex certificate gives us the assurance that the Yanis Bellagio mattress is free of chemicals, metal and toxins.

The mattress is available in three different firmnesses (low, medium and high) so you can choose the one that best suits your tastes and needs.

The brand offers a 15-year guarantee , one of the longest we have seen and with which you can take advantage of the entire useful life of the mattress without worrying.

As you can see, the quality of this mattress is high and that also affects its price, which is much higher, but we believe that, if it falls within your budget, it is worth making this investment.

Pros

  • 15 year warranty
  • Latex Talalay
  • Removable and washable cover
  • Available in various firmnesses

Contras

  • Price above average

4. Pikolin Pole

For those looking for a mattress compatible with articulated bed bases

Materials: combination of natural and synthetic latex

Height: 18.5 cm

Firmness: medium-low

Picoli pole

100% latex mattress compatible with articulated bed bases . Its block is made up of 20% natural latex and 80% synthetic latex based on high-density polymeric foam with elastic and movement-insulating properties.

It has five differentiated comfort and rest zones . In this way, the mattress adapts well to the different pressures of the body when lying down, maintaining an optimal posture throughout the night to have a correct rest.

Firmness

It is a medium-low firmness mattress, so it will be suitable for people who sleep on their side or weigh less than 75 kg . As it is a somewhat thin mattress, keep in mind that if you weigh more, you can feel the base of the bed. Its thickness is something that has not convinced us, since it loses comfort compared to others with a higher height.

It is very flexible, making it a good option for all types of bases, especially adjustable beds. As it bends easily and springs back well, it will quickly adapt to changes you may have in a box spring.

Breathability and hygiene

Pikolin Pole fundaIt is padded with hollow polyester fibers that provide greater freshness and fluffiness. It also has vertical channels that favor its ventilation.

We really like that the mattress has two covers:

  • Stretch fabric outer cover, very soft and adaptable and that allows better breathability, preventing the appearance of allergens.
  • Inner cover for greater hygiene and protection of the mattress.

eye! We find it very useful that it is removable , but the inner cover is dry cleaned, so you will have to take it to the dry cleaner.

It has the Oeko-Tex certificate for its Triple Barrier treatment: a layer of protection that acts against mites, bacteria and fungi, perfect for people with asthma and allergies.

Maintenance and warranty

The Pole mattress is reversible, so you can use it on both sides. It is advisable to turn it every 6 months for good maintenance .

You can try it for 100 nights to make sure it’s right for you. It has a good 10 year warranty.

Pros

  • Treatment against mites and bacteria
  • for articulated bed
  • Unfundable
  • 5 differentiated zones
  • 100-night trial and 10-year warranty

Contras

  • It is not 100% natural latex
  • dry cleaning
  • below average height

5. Marcapiuma

A high-density latex mattress at an affordable price

Materials: bialveolate latex

Height: 20 cm

Firmness: average

Marcapiuma new double _original

This mattress, made up of a bi-alveolated latex block, offers good support thanks to the high-density core (65 kg/m3) and the 7 different zones that adapt to the different parts of your body.

Lying down on it we notice a good reception and it also has a soft touch.

It is of medium firmness, so it could be a bit soft if you are used to a very hard mattress. On the other hand, if you want a softer mattress, you can also choose this firmness model by pulling it down.

We really like the antibacterial protection offered by the outer fabric treated with silver ions (effective against more than 650 types of bacteria). This guarantees correct hygiene after years of use and that it is a good option for people with allergies.

Maintenance and cleaning

But that does not mean that you do not have to carry out some maintenance as in all mattresses. That’s why we like it to be removable . Thanks to the zipper on all four sides, you can easily remove it and wash it in the washing machine at 60ºC.

Its has good breathability and we found it soft to the touch. In addition, it is padded and has anti-mite and anti-allergy treatment.

Its 4 side handles will allow you to turn it more easily.

At first, the mattress gives off a considerable odour, so we recommend that, when you receive it at home, you let it rest for at least one or two days in a well-ventilated room.

Delivery and warranty

The mattress arrives rolled up and vacuum packed. Let it sit for a couple of hours to return to its original shape.

We like that it is made in Italy and has the Oeko-Tex and EUROLATEX certificate. It has a 30-day trial period (something fair in our opinion) and a 10-year guarantee to cover the entire life of the mattress.

Pros

  • 7 differentiated zones
  • antibacterial protection
  • Unfundable
  • easy washing

Contras

  • Strong smell when unpacked
  • synthetic latex
  • Short trial period

Guide to buying the best latex mattress

Differences between natural and synthetic latex

Within the world of latex, we can find natural, synthetic latex and combinations of both. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on the use you are going to give it and your budget. Let’s see what they are:

natural latex

It comes from rubber resin, extracted from the Hevea brasiliensis tree. For a mattress to be classified as natural latex, at least 85% of its composition must be.

Thanks to its elasticity, flexibility and adaptability , natural latex molds itself to each part of the body, being a good material for people with back problems, cervical discomfort or ailments in certain pressure points, such as the shoulders or hips.

natural latexIt withstands the passage of time better, reaching without problems 10 years (the entire useful life of a mattress) or more and it is hypoallergenic, being suitable for people with allergies.

Although latex is not the most breathable of all materials, it is slightly porous and also easy to puncture, so it can be treated to enhance ventilation.

By not including synthetic components that reduce its density, natural latex weighs more than synthetic. It is also a more difficult material to find.

For all these reasons, they are mattresses with a higher price.

synthetic latex

For its part, synthetic latex comes from petroleum and its main components are butadiene and styrene. You can also distinguish it from natural because its color is usually whiter.

Its adaptability is lower than that of natural latex . But its degree of firmness will depend on the type of synthetic latex used and its density, so if you want a firm mattress on the high side, it will be easier for you to find it among the synthetic ones.

Did you know that… It is a material that does not suffer from the effects of humidity (unlike natural latex), so mold will not appear.

Synthetic latex mattresses are cheaper but they are somewhat hotter in summer if they do not have a special treatment such as perforations and a cover that enhances breathability. Our advice is to check if the cover has a side mesh of 3D fabric, which will allow heat to be dissipated more efficiently.

The manufacturer is required to identify the mattress as “synthetic latex” if its composition does not contain more than 20% natural latex . If you simply mention latex in the description of the mattress, it will usually be a mixture that has more than 20% natural latex, but does not reach the 85% required to be considered natural latex.

In addition, it is important to look at the certificates that guarantee the quality and safety of the materials used, such as the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 or Eurolatex.

Dunlop or Talalay latex, which is better?

When we talk about Dunlop and Talalay, we refer to the process by which the mattress has been manufactured. In other words, the initial material is the same and what changes are the steps that are followed until the ready-to-use latex sheet is obtained.

Latex Dunlop

It is the original manufacturing process (it has been used since 1929).

Latex Dunlop

Fuente: Sleep Academy

Mattresses made using this method are usually firmer because their structure is denser. This makes them somewhat more resistant to the passage of time.

In addition, it is a faster and less expensive process and therefore allows you to obtain mattresses at a slightly lower price .

We recommend Dunlop latex if you are looking for a natural latex mattress and you like medium firm beds (or medium-high depending on the mattress model) and also if you have a budget but do not want to make a large outlay.

Latex Talalay

Talalay latex has a more complex manufacturing process (vacuum and freezing steps are added) and that is why they are mattresses with a higher price.

Latex Talalay

Fuente: Sleep Academy

With this process, a softer and more porous latex is achieved , with a somewhat higher level of adaptability and breathability than Dunlop.

The main disadvantage of Talalay latex, in addition to the price, is that the process is more expensive in energy and environmental terms. Also, the durability is somewhat lower than the Dunlop.

If you don’t have a budget limit and you like rather soft mattresses, without hesitation the Talalay is your ideal choice.

In some cases manufacturers use a combination of both types : Dunlop for the mattress core and Talalay for the padding layers. In this way the extra adaptability of the Talalay is achieved but with a more moderate price .

Whichever type you choose, as long as it is a natural latex mattress, you are assured of a quality, comfortable bed with a durability far superior to any viscoelastic mattress.

Latex or memory foam mattress?

If you are looking for a mattress with good adaptability and flexibility, you may doubt whether to choose a latex or viscoelastic one. Each material has its own characteristics and knowing them will help you find the most suitable one for you.

Keep in mind that you can find only latex mattresses or those that combine it with other materials. On the other hand, memory foam mattresses are not manufactured because it is a very soft material and we would sink too much into it. So the visco will always be a layer (of variable thickness) on top of a core of foam, springs or latex.

Latex

 Advantage:

Anti-mites . Suitable for people with asthma.

Suitable for people with back problems, due to its elasticity and ergonomic properties, which make it adapt to the shape of the body, without deforming.

The best option for articulated bed bases.

Its useful life is long .

It can be easily perforated to improve its breathability.

Reduces pressure points when sleeping .

Good adaptability to all sleeping positions.

Contras:

Its price is higher.

Not recommended for upholstered bases or canapes.

Low breathability .

They need daily ventilation to avoid the appearance of humidity and mold, especially natural latex.

They are heavier , especially those made of natural latex.

viscoelastic

Advantage:

It absorbs movement well, providing good bed independence .

Great adaptability : heating up when it comes into contact with the body, it adapts completely to its contour. Therefore, it is suitable for people who sleep on their side or have ailments.

For people who spend many hours in bed.

It can provide different firmness depending on the characteristics of the core or lower layer of the mattress.

Cheaper price than natural latex.

Contras:

Although it is an athermal material, sometimes you can feel a sensation of heat . This is due to the fact that the contact surface is larger as it is a material that adapts so well to the body.

There are people who feel trapped, especially if the layer of visco is thick and high density.

Memory foam is a synthetic material made from chemicals and petroleum products. As such, it emits more volatile substances than natural products like latex. For this reason, the mattress may initially give off a strong chemical odour .

Keys to choose your mattress

If you want to compare latex with other materials to choose the most suitable for you, in this video we tell you everything you need to take into account when deciding.

5 keys to choose your mattress and buy without making a mistake

Cleaning and hygiene of the mattress

To avoid the appearance of stains, it is not advisable to place the latex mattress in places with high humidity or second homes where they will be without ventilation for a long time.

It is recommended that the cover has high breathability. The best thing is that it is made of natural materials, such as wool, 100% cotton or bamboo fibers and that it has a stripe on the sides of 3D fabric. Even better if it is removable, because it will make cleaning much easier.

washing machineDepending on the material, you can machine wash it (cotton) or you will have to take it to the dry cleaners for dry cleaning.

Tip We recommend you pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions when washing so as not to damage the mattress cover.

Latex is an anti-mite material in itself. But, in addition, some mattresses incorporate special treatments against bacteria and fungi. Something to keep in mind, especially in allergic people.

Recommended bases for latex mattresses

Articulated adapter detailAs latex needs good ventilation, the most suitable type of base for a mattress made of this material is the slatted base , as it promotes perspiration. Other types of bases can favor the accumulation of moisture (especially if you live in a very humid climate) and over the years fungi and bacteria could appear.

Also, if you are looking for a mattress for an articulated bed , the latex one is the most suitable, since its flexibility allows a very good adaptation to the movements of the base.

What firmness to choose?

Firmness is one of the key points to consider when choosing a mattress. In this case, latex is a material with a medium firmness that may vary slightly depending on its density, whether it is synthetic or natural, and the profiles or channels that the mattress has.

If you sleep on your side, move around a lot or weigh little, a low-medium firmness mattress will be suitable for you.

If you sleep on your back or are a robust person, you will need a mattress with a higher firmness so that it provides you with the necessary support and your back rests in the correct position.

Latex mattresses usually have a medium or low firmness, so if you are very robust but still want a latex mattress, we recommend that you look for a model that combines several materials, with a core of pocket springs or foam so that you have a good support, but with a layer of latex that allows you to enjoy its benefits.

Frequent questions

How are latex mattresses?

A mattress is considered to be latex when it has a core of this material. To be certified as natural latex, it must be made up of at least 85% and the rest by synthetic latex.

What is the difference between latex and viscoelastic?

memory foam mattressLatex is an ideal material for allergy sufferers and asthmatics because mites cannot nest in it. It is elastic and flexible, which makes it a good option for people looking for a medium firmness. It is also ideal for adjustable beds. In addition, it has a long service life.

For its part, viscoelastic is very adaptable and offers a good feeling of welcome, especially when sleeping on the side, as it relieves pressure points. If two people will sleep in the same bed, the visco reduces the transmission of movement. In addition, it can provide different firmness depending on its density and the materials with which it is combined, normally high-density foam or pocket springs.

How long does a latex mattress last?

Latex is a material that, with proper maintenance, can remain in optimal condition for 10-15 years. If it is made of natural latex (or has a higher proportion of it compared to the combination with synthetic latex), it will last longer. But it is important that you do good maintenance, especially in terms of ventilation, so that your latex mattress does not deteriorate with moisture.

Which is better, memory foam or latex?

The memory foam, or memory foam, is especially soft because it adapts to the body with its own heat. It recovers its original shape very quickly on cooling, when we stop putting pressure on it. Latex is flexible but does not have as much adaptability. Its advantage is that you can have a 100% latex mattress while memory foam will always be a layer in combination with other materials.

We hope that the selection of latex mattresses that we have made and the guide with the purchase recommendations have helped you choose the best latex mattress for you and that from now on your breaks will be more pleasant.
